For the cultivation of Flavobacterium species and a variety of other bacteria. Also used to differentiate bacteria based on indole production. Indole is determined by the addition of modified Kovacs reagent to cultures that have incubated for 18–24 hr. Formation of a red color in the upper layer indicates indole formation.
