For the cultivation and differentiation of Pseudomonas and related genera. For the differentiation of bacteria based on their reduction of nitrate to nitrite. After incubation of the bacterium in tryptic nitrate medium for 18–24 hr, sulfanillic acid and α-naphthol reagents are added. Nitrate reduction is indicated by the development of a red to violet color.
