For the identification of Salmonella species and differentiation of Salmonella spp. other organisms in the family Enterobacteriaceae. This medium combines two chromogens for the detection of Salmonella spp., 5-bromo-6-chloro-3-indolyl caprylate (Magenta-caprylate) and 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D galactopyranoside (X-gal). X-gal is a substrate for the enzyme β-D-galactosidase. Hydrolysis of the chromogen, Magenta-caprylate, by lactose-negative Salmonella species results in magenta colonies. The addition of the selective supplement solution increases the selectivity of the medium. Novobiocin inhibits Proteus growth and cefsulodin inhibits growth of pseudomonads.
